Ettlingen, Urban municipality in Karlsruhe district, Germany.
Ettlingen is an urban municipality in Karlsruhe district, Baden-Württemberg, extending along the Alb river. The town sits at the transition between the Rhine plain and the foothills of the Black Forest, connecting flat terrain with wooded slopes.
Emperor Otto the Great granted market rights to the settlement in 965 and established it as an administrative center. The Margraviate of Baden-Baden later built the castle and expanded the urban infrastructure.
The castle sits in the center and hosts musical performances and art displays. The pedestrian zone runs from the castle square to the Alb river, where cafés and shops fill the daily routine.
The S1 and S11 light rail lines link the town to Karlsruhe and other places in the region. Several bus routes run through the neighborhoods and make getting around inside the town easier.
The Neptune Stone documents Roman settlement in Germania Superior and was found within the current town boundaries. This stone inscription shows the presence of Roman troops in the area during antiquity.
