Carmelite Monastery Church of the Annunciation, Gothic monastery church in Hirschhorn, Germany.
The Carmelite Monastery Church of the Annunciation sits below Hirschhorn Castle and displays late Gothic design with pointed arch windows and ribbed vault ceilings throughout its interior. The structure rises on the hillside overlooking the Neckar River and displays the soaring vertical lines that define its architectural period.
Hans V von Hirschhorn established the monastery in 1406 to express his devotion and enhance his family's social standing. The complex faced dissolution in 1803, then underwent decline before being rebuilt and reconsecrated in 1910 for renewed religious use.
The interior contains memorial stones and carved figures that show the deep connection between the Hirschhorn family and this place of worship. Walking through the church, you can see how the local nobility shaped its decoration and purpose over time.
The church sits on the hillside below the castle and is accessible on foot from the village, though the descent is fairly steep. Wear sturdy shoes for the walk, and check opening times ahead of your visit since the building serves mainly as an active place of worship.
Despite plans to demolish the building to offset maintenance expenses, the town's intervention prevented destruction and saved the structure from ruin. The Catholic community's takeover in 1886 proved to be the turning point that secured its future.
