Hamburg Airport, Commercial airport in Fuhlsbüttel, Germany
Hamburg Airport is a commercial facility in the Fuhlsbüttel district on the northern edge of the city, operating two passenger terminals linked by a central plaza with shops and restaurants. The complex spans multiple levels with departure and arrival halls, dining options and retail spaces distributed across three floors, plus gates serving short and long distance flights.
The site opened in 1911 as a station for airships and gradually evolved into an international hub for airplanes over the following decades. After several expansions and rebuilds throughout the 20th century, the facility received its present official designation in 2016.
The facility honors Helmut Schmidt, who was born in the city and later became chancellor, through exhibits and displays scattered throughout the terminal building. Travelers passing through encounter references to his work and legacy in various public areas.
The S-Bahn line S1 runs regularly between the airport and downtown, reaching the main station in roughly half an hour. Signage guides travelers through the terminals, with both buildings accessible by elevator and ramp for those needing assistance.
The runway sits close enough to residential neighborhoods that aircraft taking off and landing pass directly over the rooftops of nearby houses. Visitors can watch planes from a public viewing terrace on top of Terminal 1, offering a closer look at arrivals and departures.
