Schloss Burgau, Water castle in Niederau, Düren, Germany

Schloss Burgau is a water castle in the Burgau forest near Düren-Niederau. Its manor house stands on a 50-metre-wide island ringed by a moat, with a medieval keep and south, east and north wings. The 1551 oriel above the keep is 4 by 6.6 metres and 1.75 metres deep, covered in reliefs. A three-winged outer bailey from 1685, also moated, now holds the Winkelsaal.

The castle was founded around 1100 as a fortified structure and gained its present form through medieval expansions. Multiple wings were added in different periods, ultimately reflecting its evolution into a representative residence.

The oriel on the residential tower, built in 1551, measures four by 6.6 metres and is 1.75 metres deep. Its many reliefs refer to a wedding and to classical literature. Düren's registry office uses this oriel room for wedding ceremonies on selected Saturdays.

The castle is located within the city's forested area and is easily accessible on foot or by bike. Visitors should be aware that access may vary depending on events, and checking in advance about opening conditions is recommended.
