St. Nikolaus, church
St. Nikolaus is a church building in neoromanesque style located in Leverkusen with a cruciform layout and a semicircular apse. The structure was built from red brick and features a three-nave basilica configuration with a large tower on the east side and two smaller towers flanking the western entrance.
The first stone was laid on 8 July 1894 and construction was completed by spring 1895. The official opening took place on 27 May 1895, with Archbishop Antonius Fischer presiding over the ceremony and relics from the previous church transferred to the new high altar.
The church takes its name from Saint Nicholas, a historical figure whose legends speak of generosity and aid to the poor. The space continues to serve the community as a gathering place for baptisms, weddings, and funeral services, where life's important moments are marked and shared.
The church sits on an elevated location near Berliner Strasse and is easily visible and found from a distance. Visitors should note that regular maintenance work takes place and access may occasionally be limited during renovation periods.
Four church bells were cast in 1953 by the renowned Bochumer Verein foundry and have different names including the Heart of Jesus and Mary. A mission cross from 1788 is part of the interior furnishings and originates from the earlier church that stood on the same site.
