Soviet War Memorial, War memorial and military cemetery in Treptower Park, Berlin, Germany.
The Soviet War Memorial is a monument and burial ground in Treptower Park, Berlin. The site covers around nine hectares (22 acres) and includes wide lawns and rows of trees alongside a 12-meter (39-foot) bronze figure of a soldier holding a child.
The memorial recalls the Battle of Berlin in April and May 1945, when tens of thousands of Soviet soldiers died. Built between 1946 and 1949 to designs by Soviet architect Yakov Belopolsky, it holds around 7,000 graves.
The site takes its name from the memory of the fallen Red Army and displays Cyrillic inscriptions throughout. Visitors walk through a quiet park landscape where individual sculptures and stone panels form a wide ensemble.
The site has two entrances, one to the north via Puschkinallee and one to the south on Straße am Treptower Park. The walk from either entrance to the central statue covers some distance across open ground.
Near the entrance stands a three-meter (10-foot) figure representing a mourning woman, known as Mother Russia. She is placed between two carved granite flags and forms the opening to the complex.
