Niesky, Greater district town in Saxony, Germany
Niesky is a town in eastern Saxony located within the Görlitz district, situated on gently rolling terrain. The central area revolves around the Church of the Brethren and Zinzendorfplatz, with residential neighborhoods and green spaces spreading outward from this core.
Moravian religious refugees founded the settlement in 1742, naming it after the Czech word meaning 'low' or 'humble'. The Moravian Church governed the community for 150 years until transitioning to secular administration in the late 19th century.
The Zinzendorfplatz central square features the Church of the Brethren, a visible reminder of the Moravian faith that shaped the community's identity. Local life still reflects this religious heritage through various community traditions and gatherings.
The town is served by regional bus and train connections to nearby communities, making it accessible for day trips. The compact center can be explored on foot within a couple of hours, with the main sights clustered around the central square.
Benjamin Henry Boneval Latrobe, who would become a leading American architect, studied at the Moravian School here in the 1770s. His formative years in this community influenced his career before he went on to contribute to the design of the United States Capitol.
