Gemäldegalerie

The Gemäldegalerie is an art museum in the Kulturforum district of Berlin, presenting European paintings from the 1200s through the 1700s across more than 70 rooms. The exhibition space covers roughly two kilometers and holds around 1,250 works.

The collection began in 1830 and grew rapidly after 1871 under Wilhelm von Bode, who filled gaps through deliberate purchases. This planned approach differed from older princely cabinets built on personal taste.

Rooms group works by regional origin, letting visitors compare Dutch interiors with Italian devotional panels painted during the same decades. The arrangement encourages quiet study of brushwork and composition rather than hurried touring.

Rooms follow a clear sequence, making it easy to navigate without a map. An audio guide offers background on individual works and helps make sense of unfamiliar techniques.

Unlike comparable collections formed from royal holdings, this one grew through government purchases starting in 1815. That origin shaped a scholarly collecting philosophy rather than courtly preference.
