Amper, River system in Bavaria, Germany

The Amper is a river in southern Bavaria that originates from mountain streams in the Alps and flows roughly 200 kilometers until it joins the Isar. Along its path, it passes through valleys and past numerous small towns before reaching its confluence.

The river was once an important trade route, with steamboats traveling between towns like Stegen and Grafrath in past centuries. As railways expanded in the 19th century, the waterway gradually lost its role in transportation.

The sections near Dachau and Fürstenfeldbruck are gathering places for locals who spend time on the banks and meadows. Here you see how the river shapes the daily rhythm of nearby villages.

The banks are easily accessible in many places for relaxation and walking. Cyclists will find well-developed paths that follow the river throughout its course and are suitable for all skill levels.

The river is used by only a single hydroelectric facility, making it one of the few major watercourses in the Alpine region with so little industrial development. This preserves long stretches in a relatively natural state.
