Kloster Saarn

Kloster Saarn is a Cistercian monastery in Mülheim an der Ruhr with buildings from different periods that show how the site developed over the centuries. The complex includes an abbey church, residential buildings, and work structures that together demonstrate how monastic life functioned.

The monastery was founded around 1200 and became a center for education and agriculture in the region for centuries. The nuns held large lands and shaped how the surrounding area developed, until the Reformation changed its role and importance.

The site is open to visitors and works well for a walk through the grounds to explore the buildings and the location by the Ruhr river. You can reach it easily on foot or by bike and have time to look around the different parts of the complex.

The monastery sits right along the Ruhr river and was shaped for centuries by water traffic and trade, which helped it grow as an economic center. You can still see this connection to the river in how the buildings are positioned and in the old pathways.
