Harkort’sche Fabrik

The Harkort'sche Fabrik is a former iron goods works in Hagen-Haspe with a machine hall showing features of early 19th century industrial architecture. The building was renovated in 1994 and now houses a carpentry business that uses the historic spaces.

Johann Caspar Harkort IV founded this facility after 1800 as an iron goods factory, later expanding into railway components and bridge construction. The works became known for its technical skills and innovations in metalworking.

The site shows how craft businesses operate in the region and make use of the existing spaces for their daily work. The carpentry shop that has been based here since the renovation demonstrates how old factory buildings remain useful today.

The site is located in Hagen-Haspe and is easily reached; it is recommended to explore the outside and publicly visible areas. Since the facility is still actively used as a workshop, visitors should respect the ongoing craft work.

The works created the Rotunde exhibition hall in 1873 for the Vienna World Exhibition, a project that displayed German engineering on the international stage. This undertaking shows how regional manufacturers participated in major projects.
