Marienkirche, Frankfurt, Gothic church in Frankfurt Oder, Germany
The Marienkirche is a substantial brick structure built in Gothic style, measuring 77 meters in length and 45 meters in width. The interior is defined by three large Gothic stained glass windows that depict biblical scenes and cast patterned light across the church space.
Construction of the church began in the mid-13th century and coincided with the growth of the city. Later, in the early 16th century, it became the university church when Viadrina University was established.
The church takes its name from Mary, mother of Jesus, and this dedication continues to shape the spiritual identity of the place today. People gather here for worship and quiet reflection, maintaining its role as a living center of faith in the city.
The entrance is designed to be accessible for people with mobility needs and visitors can move through the space comfortably. Regular opening hours accommodate both worship services and individual visits.
The west side of the church portal displays stone carvings of devils and demons positioned high on the walls. These unusual decorations seem intended to startle visitors in a tongue-in-cheek way before they enter the sacred space.
