Zoo Hoyerswerda is a 6-hectare facility housing about 1,000 animals representing 120 different species. The grounds also feature approximately 120 plant species, including ginkgo and dawn redwood trees.
The zoo began in the 1950s when exotic ducks and swans were introduced to the castle moat. This modest start eventually expanded into the present-day facility with numerous animal enclosures.
The zoo displays artworks from international sculpture symposia that took place between 1975 and 1989, with pieces like Children's Dance and Hippopotamus scattered across the grounds. These sculptures blend into the natural landscape and add an unexpected cultural layer to the visitor experience.
The zoo is located on the castle grounds and can be explored on foot since all areas are laid out on a flat, manageable terrain. Visitors should allow several hours to see the different animal sections and gardens throughout the site.
The facility operates a specialized raptor care station where injured birds of prey are nursed back to health. Once recovered, these birds are released back into their natural habitats.
