Schloss Hugenpoet

Schloss Hugenpoet is a stone castle in Essen made up of three connected buildings surrounded by moats and a grand entrance portal decorated with heraldic shields from 1872. The complex creates the impression of a fortified residence where living spaces, defensive features, and formal display come together.

The castle was first recorded in 778 as a royal possession of Charlemagne. After suffering damage during the Thirty Years' War, it was comprehensively rebuilt between 1647 and 1696.

The castle displays Renaissance design elements that reflect local building traditions of its era. You can see how the architecture shows the craftsmanship valued during the periods when it was built and renewed.

The castle is located at August-Thyssen-Straße 51A in Essen and operates as a hotel with 36 rooms. You will find a restaurant on the premises that serves guests from Wednesday to Saturday.

The castle preserved its original moat system, which sets it apart from many other castles in the region. The Ustinov Suite is named after actor Peter Ustinov, who stayed here frequently throughout his life.
