Roman Catholic Diocese of Würzburg, Catholic diocese in Würzburg, Germany.

The Diocese of Würzburg is a Catholic diocese in Lower Franconia that covers a large territory and includes hundreds of parishes. This administrative structure helps coordinate pastoral care and church services across numerous communities.

The diocese was founded in 741 when Saint Boniface established it and appointed Saint Burchard as its first bishop. Burchard built the first cathedral and connected it to a Benedictine monastery, which became the foundation for the region's church development.

The diocese honors three saints - Kilian, Totnan, and Colman - whose veneration appears in churches and processions throughout the region today. These traditions reflect how Irish missionaries shaped the religious life of Franconia.

The diocese is based in Würzburg, where the cathedral serves as the church center and is open to visitors. Those exploring the region will find numerous parish churches and religious sites scattered throughout the territory.

The Würzburg Cathedral contains around 35 monumental tombs, several of which were created by sculptor Tilman Riemenschneider. These artworks display the quality of medieval stonework and remain remarkably well preserved today.
