Museum of Zoology Dresden

The Museum of Zoology Dresden is a research institution with over 6 million preserved animal specimens, including extensive insect collections, skeletal remains, and skins from around the world. The collection primarily serves scientific studies and is used by researchers worldwide for taxonomic and systematic research.

The museum was established in 2009 and developed from earlier collections that suffered major losses during World War II. After the war, surviving materials were carefully rebuilt and integrated into modern research facilities.

The institution publishes the scientific journal Vertebrate Zoology, contributing to zoological research through studies of taxonomy, systematics, and species documentation.

The institution specializes in research and lending specimens to scientists, with one of Saxony's largest zoological libraries on-site. Visitors should note that this is primarily a research facility and regular opening hours may be limited.

The collection includes about 53,000 type specimens, including holotypes, lectotypes, and syntypes that serve as reference material for describing approximately 15,000 animal species and subspecies. These original records are invaluable for global taxonomic research.
