Schwabing

Schwabing is a residential district north of the Siegestor in Munich, stretching along Leopoldstrasse with Art Nouveau buildings sitting alongside contemporary structures. The area shows this architectural variety across its streets and connects to the city through several U-Bahn stations.

From the 1900s onward, this place transformed from a village into a center for artists and thinkers, drawing figures like Wassily Kandinsky and writer Thomas Mann. This period shaped its lasting identity as a space for creative minds.

The Walking Man sculpture stands prominently on Leopoldstrasse, where galleries nearby feature works by contemporary German artists today.

Walk along Hohenzollernstrasse and Feilitzschstrasse to find shops, restaurants, and cafes throughout the neighborhood. Getting around is straightforward thanks to the several U-Bahn stations positioned across the area.

The Alte Simpl restaurant preserves objects from around 1900 when artists gathered there to discuss and debate society and ideas. The space still carries the sense of those conversations that once filled it.
