Nockherberg, Terrace in Au-Haidhausen, Germany
Nockherberg is a terrace complex in the Au-Haidhausen district, running along the eastern shore of the Isar River in Munich. The site sits roughly twenty meters (65 feet) above the water level and offers open views toward the river and the opposite slopes.
Georg Nockher sold his summer residence in 1858 to the Paulaner brewery, which converted the grounds into a restaurant with an attached beer garden. Since then, the site has been linked to Bavarian brewing tradition and known for its seasonal celebrations.
The name comes from Georg Nockher, a banker whose summer residence was later turned into a brewery site. Today the terrace serves mainly as a beer garden, where Munich locals and visitors sit outdoors and enjoy traditional meals.
Several footpaths lead up from the Isar to the grounds and connect it with the riverbank. Trams and buses stop within a few walking minutes, so reaching the area without a car is possible.
Every spring the site hosts the Salvator strong beer tapping ceremony, where politicians face humorous public criticism. The event has been broadcast live on Bavarian television since 1982 and draws a large audience each time.
