Lietzensee, Urban lake in Charlottenburg, Germany.
Lietzensee is a lake in Berlin's Charlottenburg district surrounded by a public park with tree-lined paths and multiple seating areas. The water is enclosed by curved shorelines that create a natural setting for walking and resting.
The lake was created in the early 19th century after a military officer received a royal reward for his service and used it to develop the land. The area gradually became a designed park open to the public.
The name Lietzensee comes from an old estate called Lietzow that once occupied this land. Today, art nouveau buildings and sculptures around the water reflect how Berlin looked and felt in the early 1900s.
The lake is easily accessible by public transportation and features paved walking paths throughout the park. Benches are scattered along the shoreline, and a restaurant with outdoor seating overlooks the water.
Benedictine monks once fished in this four-meter-deep lake and drew water for their monasteries. Today the water provides a protected habitat for swans, ducks, and grebes that live year-round.
