Aasee, Artificial reservoir in Münster, Germany
Aasee is an artificial lake on the western side of Münster that stretches over two kilometers while remaining no deeper than two meters at any point. A paved circular path of about eight kilometers loops around the entire basin, linking park areas, playgrounds and open meadows along the way.
Work started in 1914 but was halted by the First World War and only finished two decades later. The basin was created mainly to prevent flooding from the river Aa in the city center.
The name Aasee comes from the small river Aa that was dammed to form this body of water. Students and families gather on the grassy banks to read, picnic or simply lie in the sun on warm afternoons.
Anyone planning to walk around the entire lake should allow about an hour and a half to two hours depending on pace and stops. Boat rental stations offer rowboats and pedal boats that require no prior experience to use.
A solar-powered passenger vessel named SOLAARIS operates on the lake and runs entirely on 28 solar panels mounted on its roof. The boat can carry up to 68 people and glides silently across the shallow water.
