Münster, University town in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany

Münster is a university town in North Rhine-Westphalia with a sprawling old quarter shaped by churches and historic buildings. The streets in the center are mostly flat and wind between medieval structures, parks, and the artificial Lake Aasee.

In 1648, the Westphalian Peace was signed at the town hall, ending the Thirty Years' War in Europe. After heavy destruction in World War II, the center was largely rebuilt with its gabled houses and arcades.

Students from different countries mix with local residents in street cafes and beer gardens, creating a welcoming environment throughout the year. During summer months, Lake Aasee becomes a social meeting point where families and young people stroll along the shore or go out on the water.

The city has more than 450 kilometers (280 miles) of dedicated bicycle paths, making bikes the preferred means of transport for residents and students. The center is largely pedestrian-friendly, with many areas traffic-calmed or fully car-free.

Prinzipalmarkt street connects 48 historic gabled houses from different centuries through covered arcade walkways for pedestrians. Every first Saturday in October, a send market takes place where thousands of people walk through the streets sampling local specialties.
