Münster Zoo, Modern zoological garden in Münster, Germany
This zoological garden in Münster houses around 300 animal species from different climate zones in naturalistic enclosures. Covered walkways link the separate animal houses and allow visitors to complete circuits in rain or sunshine.
The facility opened in 1974 and replaced the old municipal menagerie with a new concept. The all-weather principle made it possible for the first time to complete circuits independently of conditions outside.
The name Allwetterzoo reflects the covered pathways that let visitors move between animal houses in any weather. Families often spend entire days here, using the playgrounds and rest areas scattered among the enclosures.
Visitors can walk through the covered passages throughout the year, while outdoor areas offer additional viewing points when the weather is fine. Several dining spots and picnic zones are distributed across the grounds and allow breaks during the circuit.
The facility participates in several breeding programs for threatened species and has achieved notable successes with some of them. Among these is the reproduction of the Charco Azul pupfish, which is extinct in the wild.
