Überwasserkirche, Gothic parish church in Münster-Altstadt, Germany
Überwasserkirche is a Gothic hall church with three naves and twin towers rising 64 meters high. Its façades display characteristic Gothic features such as pointed arches and stone tracery windows.
A first church on this site was consecrated in 1040 by King Heinrich III. The current Gothic structure was begun in 1340 and came to define Münster's skyline.
The church was originally connected to a foundation that educated women from noble families. This institution later contributed to the founding of the University of Münster.
The church offers wheelchair access for visitors with mobility limitations. Inside you will find two organs from the 20th century that enhance the musical life of the parish.
In 1941, Bishop Clemens August Graf von Galen delivered a bold sermon here against the Nazi regime titled 'We are the anvil, not the hammer.' These words reveal the church's courage during a time of severe oppression.
