Central German Metropolitan Region, Metropolitan region in Central Germany
The Central German Metropolitan Region connects parts of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia as a network of medium-sized cities. These communities work together to strengthen economic ties, improve transportation, and support cultural activities across central Germany.
The region was established in 2009, replacing an earlier association that connected five major cities. This reorganization focused on improving cooperation between communities across central Germany.
Each member city contributes to regional development through universities, research centers, and annual events like the Händel Festival in Halle.
Leipzig-Halle Airport serves as the main transportation hub with connections to various destinations across Germany and beyond. The region benefits from good road and rail networks that make it easily accessible for visitors.
The region is the only metropolitan association located entirely within former East Germany. It operates as a registered association of municipalities and companies working to address shared regional challenges.
