Altes Lager, Archaeological site with stone ship formation in Niedergörsdorf, Germany

Altes Lager is an archaeological site featuring a stone ship formation, where carefully placed stones outline an ancient vessel's shape. The grounds also contain remains of aircraft shelters and runways from the mid-20th century.

The stone ship dates to the Bronze Age and likely served as part of a burial site. The location later became a Soviet air base during the Cold War, which operated until the early 1990s.

The site blends ancient burial customs with traces of military occupation, and visitors can see exhibitions housed in converted structures. How people today engage with both layers of history shapes the character of the place.

The site can be explored on foot, though terrain is uneven in places and sturdy shoes are recommended. Information panels help with orientation, and guides on-site can provide additional context about the formations and structures.

A former aircraft shelter was converted into a residence by a local artist and now serves as an informal museum space. This creative repurposing shows how the site has found new life beyond its military and archaeological past.
