Munich-Riem Airport
Munich-Riem Airport, International airport in Bavaria, Germany.
Munich-Riem Airport was an airfield that once spread across eastern Munich with a central terminal building, control tower, and network of runways. Today the former grounds house the Munich Trade Fair center with modern exhibition halls replacing the original aviation infrastructure.
The airport opened in 1939 as a modern facility for civilian aviation. It served as a military airfield during World War II and later returned to civilian use, operating until 1992 when it closed to make way for the development of the current trade fair center.
The Wappenhalle terminal building shows how airports were designed in the 1930s and now stands as a protected monument. Its style still shapes how visitors experience the site and tells a story of aviation's past.
The site is easily reached by the U2 subway line with stops at Messestadt West and Messestadt Ost stations. The area is flat and easy to walk through, with straightforward access to the trade fair grounds and any remaining monuments on the property.
Few people know that the legendary band Nirvana performed their final concert here in March 1994, several years after the airport closed. This event connects music history to the site in an unexpected way.
