Alte Burg, Medieval castle ruins in Maroldsweisach, Germany

The castle ruins stand at 458 meters above the Weisachtal valley on a rock plateau, featuring a late Romanesque bergfried reaching 10 meters high.

First documented in 1232, the castle controlled traffic from Bamberg to northern regions until its abandonment in 1703 following multiple conflicts.

The castle operated as a Ganerbenburg where eight noble families lived together by 1296, demonstrating medieval cooperative living arrangements.

The district of Haßberge maintains the site since 1972, offering visitors access to medieval herb gardens and local fruit paths through the ruins.

The castle features a chapel from 1438 dedicated to St Nicholas and the Virgin Mary, which later influenced the construction of a separate parish church.
