Altenstein Castle, Medieval castle ruins in Maroldsweisach, Germany.
Altenstein Castle is a ruined hilltop fortress on a narrow ridge near Maroldsweisach, in the Haßberge hills of Bavaria. The surviving stone walls enclose an inner ward, and the elevated position offers open views over the Weisachtal valley below.
The site was first mentioned in writing in 1232 and passed through the hands of several noble families over the following centuries. In 1703 the last residents left and moved to the Pfaffendorf valley, after which the castle was gradually abandoned.
The grounds include a reconstructed medieval herb garden showing the plants people once used for cooking and healing. Walking through it gives a sense of daily life inside a medieval fortress.
A marked trail leads through the ruins and lets you explore the site at your own pace. The path runs along an uneven ridge, so sturdy footwear is a good idea before you set out.
The ridge where the ruins stand was once part of a network of fortifications, several of which are still visible today as separate structures. These remains are now connected by a 14-station castle trail that runs through the wider region.
