Alte Grimme, Mountain summit in Hochsauerlandkreis, Germany

Alte Grimme is a mountain summit located in the Rothaar Mountains within North Rhine-Westphalia, reaching approximately 755 meters in elevation. The peak sits within a forested landscape that characterizes this region of upland terrain.

The summit's history is tied to forestry and mining rather than a monument. The NSG Alte Grimme, a 13-hectare protected area of spruce and hornbeam on the western flank, was designated in 2008; forestry there and on the southeast flank was never possible, so natural woodland survived and logging is now prohibited. About 50 m south of the Butterfeld reserve lies the adit of the former Zeche Elend mine, where ore was extracted until 1914 with little success, giving the roughly 30 m tunnel its name.

On the wooded summit stands a Bonifatius cross, with the Grimme-Kreuz hut a few metres away as a shelter. A narrow wild meadow opens on the otherwise spruce-covered peak. The cross and hut are the landmarks walkers look for at the top.

Alte Grimme is reached only on forest and hiking paths, for example from the Kreisstraße 50 running from Winterberg through Elkeringhausen toward the L 740 to Küstelberg. The Etappe 7 section of the Winterberger Hochtour between Elkeringhausen and Züschen passes north, east and south of the mountain and crosses its eastern slopes, meeting the Historischer Wanderpfad from Elkeringhausen that also leads to the Zeche Elend.

About 50 m south of the Butterfeld nature reserve, between Alte Grimme and Roth, lies the mouth of the Zeche Elend adit. Ore was mined there until 1914 with little success, which earned the roughly 30 m long tunnel its name; the adit entrance is a protected landscape element.
