Altes Theater, Market hall and university building in Ravensburg, Germany.
Altes Theater is a market hall and university building in Ravensburg featuring a monumental vaulted interior divided into two arcades by a low partition wall connecting Marktstraße to Gespinstmarkt. The ground floor continues its market functions while upper levels have served educational purposes for Ravensburg University of Cooperative Education since 2014.
The structure was built in 1625 as a market hall before being converted to a theater in 1698. Its use as a theater ended in 1881 when fire regulations forced the closure.
The facade facing Marktstraße displays a relief emblem with the city crest and imperial eagle, reflecting the building's construction period. This carving draws visitors' attention and marks the structure as an important civic landmark.
The building is easily accessible during the day as the market floor remains open to the public and the arcades invite walking through. For visiting the university areas, check opening hours ahead of time or ask locally about access.
From 1956 to 2011, the building housed an art gallery displaying modern and contemporary works. This cultural chapter represented an important phase before it transitioned to its current academic role.
