Ravensburg, Medieval trading city in Upper Swabia, Germany.
Ravensburg is a city in the district of Ravensburg in Upper Swabia, known for its well-preserved medieval towers and fortifications. The old town is dominated by several tall towers, including the white Mehlsack, the Blaserturm, and the Obertor, all dating from the 14th and 15th centuries and shaping the skyline.
The settlement gained status as a Free Imperial City in 1276 and developed into an important trading center. The Great Ravensburg Trading Society was founded in 1380 and brought prosperity through long-distance trade in linen and spices to the region.
Guided walks through the old quarter often start at Marienplatz and wind through narrow lanes lined with timber-framed houses, where you can still see how merchants once stored their goods. On market days, the square fills with stalls selling regional produce, and visitors wander between the historic buildings.
The tourist information office at Marienplatz organizes walking tours of the old town that cover the main towers and lanes in about 90 minutes. The narrow streets and cobblestones require comfortable shoes, and many viewpoints are accessible only by steep stairs.
The headquarters of Ravensburger, a company founded in 1883, produces millions of puzzles and board games annually in the town. Visitors can explore the Ravensburger Museum, where interactive exhibits show the history of game production.
