Barbarossastein, Memorial stone in Lauratal, Ravensburg, Germany.
Barbarossastein is a large glacial boulder mounted on a concrete base in Lauratal, featuring an engraved portrait relief of Emperor Frederick I. The memorial was erected to commemorate the legendary birthplace of the emperor and stands prominently in the landscape.
The memorial was inaugurated on June 19, 1910, after local residents collected donations to honor the legendary birthplace of Emperor Frederick I. This initiative reflects 19th-century interest in connecting regional history to medieval legends.
The stone carries an engraved poem linking folk tales to the legendary connection with Emperor Frederick I and the site's past. The inscription reflects local traditions that visitors can read and experience today.
The memorial is accessible via several hiking trails that wind through the hilly Lauratal landscape. Sturdy footwear is recommended as paths can be uneven, and spring through autumn offers the most pleasant visiting conditions.
Moving the massive boulder from Vogt to its current location required around ten horses, demonstrating the enormous effort of the local community. This stone later replaced remains of the earlier Haslachburg at the same spot.
