Memorial of the Gray Buses, Holocaust memorial in Ravensburg, Germany
This memorial consists of gray concrete replicas of buses positioned at the entrance of a former medical institution, each bearing the question "Where are you taking us?" in German. One installation remains permanently at the site of the former Weißenau sanatorium, while another bus travels to different German cities throughout the year.
From 1939 to 1945 under Nazi rule, more than 70,000 people were transported from medical facilities to locations where they were killed in what became known as Aktion T-4. This systematic program targeted those the authorities deemed unsuitable to live.
The name references the operation that targeted people in hospitals and care facilities across the nation. Visitors encounter spaces where daily routines once continued while this dark chapter unfolded in the background.
The permanent installation at the former sanatorium is accessible and can be visited without special preparation. The traveling bus visits different locations, so checking ahead about its current position helps ensure you can view it during your visit.
The installation deliberately blocks the entrance gate of the former medical facility, symbolically interrupting normal access to the grounds. This placement directly links the physical presence of the deportations to the place where people once carried out their daily work.
