Alter Zoll

Alter Zoll is a fortification with massive stone walls situated along the Rhine riverbank in Bonn and features historical cannons on display. The site offers views across the river and surrounding landscape, with benches and green spaces where visitors can spend time.

The structure was built in 1642 during the Thirty Years War as a military fortification and later served as a customs facility for goods transported on the river. It played an important role in controlling river traffic during that period.

The place takes its name from the former customs house and now serves as a gathering spot where students and local residents meet throughout the day. You can observe groups sitting together on the grounds, enjoying conversations with views of the river.

The site is easy to access and has plenty of outdoor seating where you can relax and spend time at your leisure. A visit works well at any time of day, though late afternoon and evening hours offer better light and fewer crowds.

A large plane tree planted around 150 years ago grows on the grounds and is now one of the most striking features of the site. The tree has grown remarkably large and provides shade for those visiting.
