Dillingen an der Donau, Administrative center in Swabia, Germany.
Dillingen an der Donau is a town in the Swabian administrative region of Bavaria and serves as the seat of the surrounding district. The old town extends along the northern bank of the Danube, with narrow lanes, market squares, and historic buildings from different periods.
In 1258 authority passed from the counts of Dillingen to the prince-bishops of Augsburg, who established an important ecclesiastical seat here. Later a university developed, shaping the intellectual life of the region for centuries.
The name comes from its location on the Donau, the river that shapes the layout of the old center. Today visitors walk past gabled houses and squares where cafés and small shops open onto cobbled streets.
At the tourism office on Königstraße visitors can pick up maps and advice on sights within walking distance. Most buildings in the center lie close together and are reached by flat pathways.
In Schretzheim archaeologists uncovered an Alemannic burial ground from the sixth and seventh centuries, with more than six hundred graves. The burial goods offer insights into the way of life and crafts of that period.
