Alte Sorge-Schleife, Nature reserve in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany
Alte Sorge-Schleife is a nature reserve in Schleswig-Holstein covering about 760 hectares with several river bends and wetland areas spread across three municipalities. The landscape consists mainly of grasslands and various habitats that support different bird species and wildlife.
The protected area was first established in 1991 with 660 hectares and later expanded in 2009 to its current size. This expansion reflected growing efforts to preserve the region's wetland ecosystems.
The reserve forms part of a regional conservation program for the wet lowlands between Eider, Treene and Sorge rivers, serving as an educational resource for understanding local wetland ecosystems.
The reserve is best explored using marked trails and observation points, with the breeding season from March to August offering the most active wildlife viewing. Wet conditions mean sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are essential year-round.
The Colsrakmoor section stands out as a former raised bog undergoing natural restoration without human management to return to its original form. The moorland forests and tall herb communities developing here demonstrate how ecosystems can regenerate on their own.
