Seligenstadt, Historic municipality in Offenbach district, Germany.
Seligenstadt is a municipality in Hesse that stretches along the Main River and includes the main center plus two districts, Froschhausen and Klein-Welzheim. The settlement lies in Offenbach district, where residential neighborhoods, commercial streets, and green spaces shape the townscape.
Roman troops built a fort here in the year 100, which later became the settlement Ober-Mulinheim. The current name emerged after 830, when Einhard commissioned a basilica that fundamentally changed the townscape.
The local Hessian dialect still colors conversations in markets and shops along the river. Visitors hear this regional speech most clearly from older residents who use traditional expressions.
The municipality is best explored on foot or by bicycle, as the main areas lie close together. Visitors who want to see both districts should plan several hours for the journey.
In 2020 the town officially received the additional name Einhardstadt to honor its connection to the basilica founder in the ninth century. This extra name now appears on town signs and official documents alongside the original designation.
