Seedorf, Lower Saxony, municipality of Germany
Seedorf is a rural municipality within the Selsingen collective municipality, in the Rotenburg (Wümme) district of Lower Saxony. The terrain is flat, with farmland covering most of the area, broken up by small patches of woodland and narrow village roads lined with houses.
From 1963 to 2006, Seedorf was home to a Dutch military base where the 41st Mechanized Brigade was stationed. After the Dutch forces left, the German Bundeswehr took over the site and established the 31st Airborne Brigade there.
The name Seedorf means 'village by a lake', yet no notable lake exists nearby today. Walking through the area, visitors notice the typical North German farmhouses and tidy gardens that shape the feel of everyday rural life here.
Getting to Seedorf is easiest by car, as public transport in this rural area is very limited. Visitors planning to explore the surrounding region should consider using a nearby larger town as a base.
The former Dutch military base operated for over 4 decades within the village, creating a self-contained community with its own infrastructure alongside the civilian settlement. Long after the Dutch left, the site continued its military role under German command.
