Wernigerode Castle, Neo-Gothic castle in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany

Wernigerode Castle is a castle in Saxony-Anhalt that rises from a hilltop above the town, displaying a blend of Gothic and Renaissance design elements. The structure dominates views with its numerous towers and ornate façade details visible from many angles across the surrounding landscape.

The castle originated in the 12th century as a fortification and underwent several major rebuilding phases that shaped its Gothic and Renaissance features. In the 19th century, it gained its current Neo-Gothic appearance through a comprehensive reconstruction project in the later decades of the 1800s.

The castle served as the seat of the counts of Wernigerode and remains central to the town's identity today. Walking through its rooms, you sense how closely the building shaped the lives of the people living here for centuries.

The location is reachable from town via a clearly marked path, and multiple interior levels are open to visitors. Comfortable shoes are advisable since the climb to the building can be steep and touring the rooms involves considerable walking.

As you walk around the building's exterior, the asymmetrical shape and varying tower heights continuously reveal fresh perspectives from every vantage point. This quality makes it worthwhile to view the structure from all sides to appreciate its full architectural complexity.
