Wernigerode, Urban municipality in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany
Wernigerode is a municipality in Harz District of Saxony-Anhalt, sitting at the northeastern edge of the Harz mountain range at roughly 250 meters elevation. The core consists of narrow lanes lined with half-timbered buildings and a central market square that preserves the medieval layout.
The settlement received town rights in 1229 following the model of Goslar, which led to the creation of a new district called Neustadt. In the late 15th century the Gothic town hall was built, which still marks the market square today.
The town hall with its carved timber decorations serves as a meeting point in the market square and draws visitors who admire the woodwork patterns. Surrounding lanes show houses with painted beams in red, green and ochre that create a sense of stepping into an earlier era.
The municipality is reached via federal highways B6 and B244, which connect to surrounding regions. Visitors find parking areas on the town edge, from where the old town center is reachable on foot in a few minutes.
The Hasseröder brewery was founded in 1872 and continues to produce lager following traditional recipes in the town. Visitors recognize the brewery site by the tall chimneys on the town edge, which have shaped the skyline for over a century.
