Brockenuhr, Directional compass structure at Brocken mountain peak, Wernigerode, Germany
The Brockenuhr forms a circular compass rose with a diameter of 30 meters, featuring 48 bronze plates embedded in the ground around central granite stones.
The initial cartographic version emerged in 1835 when Brocken innkeeper Eduard Nehse published a lithograph depicting directional indicators on the mountain summit.
The bronze plates display names and distances of geographical locations, helping visitors understand their spatial relationship to cities and landmarks across Germany.
Six large granite stones, with the largest weighing 19 tons, mark the center of this navigational installation at the summit of Northern Germany's highest peak.
The bronze plates, measuring 0.5 by 1.5 meters each, are strategically positioned to indicate the exact direction of their referenced destinations.
