Zillierbach Dam

The Zillierbach Dam extends 186 meters in length and rises 47 meters high, creating a reservoir that holds 2.83 million cubic meters of water.

Construction of the dam began in 1934 after concerns about flooding risks in Wernigerode, with workers discovering Bronze Age artifacts during the building process.

The dam structure represents German engineering from the 1930s, featuring a modified design that replaced the initial arch dam concept with a gravity dam configuration.

A 4.5-kilometer trail encircles the reservoir, connecting to the Peterstein summit and providing access points from neighboring towns for hikers and nature enthusiasts.

The water body, formerly known as Holtemme until the 16th century, supplies drinking water to multiple Harz villages including Elbingerode, Elend, and Schierke.
