Harburg, Former castle site in Wernigerode, Germany

Harburg is a vanished medieval hilltop castle near Wernigerode in the Harz, Saxony-Anhalt. Nothing remains of the castle built around 1150; only the castle mound survives, with a castle site measuring 16 by 52 metres. A excursion restaurant reopened on the site in summer 2018.

Built around 1150, the Harburg was a medieval hilltop castle above Wernigerode, also called Haarburg or Hardenberg. Nothing of the structure survives; only the castle hill remains, with a plateau measuring 16 by 52 metres. Until 1956 a Bismarck monument stood on the site, and the rebuilt viewing tower is named Bismarck Tower after it.

The name Harburg, earlier also Haarburg or Hardenberg, survives only in records and in the name of the Bismarck Tower lookout erected on the hill. On the former castle plateau, 16 by 52 metres, an excursion restaurant reopened in summer 2018, so the site is used today for views and refreshment rather than fortifications.
