Harz District, Administrative district in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany
Harz District is an administrative region in Saxony-Anhalt with Halberstadt as its administrative center and comprises a mosaic of mountains, forests, agricultural areas, and smaller towns. The territory connects valleys with forested heights and offers various landscape types through its diverse topography.
The district was created in 2007 through the merger of three former administrative areas, which modernized the regional structure. This reorganization established a new administrative unit for the previously separate territories.
The region contains medieval towns where visitors can experience local craftsmanship and regional cooking in restaurants and at markets.
The region is served by a network of buses and local transport connecting its various towns and villages. Visitors should note that more rural areas may have less frequent service and require advance planning.
The Harz District includes parts of the Harz, one of Germany's oldest and most extensive forest areas spanning multiple states. These forested mountain regions offer visitors lesser-known hiking routes away from heavily trafficked tourist paths.
