Baumann's Cave

Baumann's Cave, Show cave and theater in Oberharz am Brocken, Germany.

Description

Baumann's Cave is a limestone cave system in the region that extends through multiple chambers. The spaces contain numerous stalactites, stalagmites, and mineral deposits formed over millions of years.

History

A miner named Friedrich Baumann discovered the cave system in 1536 while searching for iron ore. This discovery marked the start of organized cave tours in Germany.

Culture

The Goethe Hall is an underground performance space named after the poet who visited the cave multiple times. Theater productions take place within this natural rock chamber.

Practical

The guided tour lasts about 50 minutes and requires climbing approximately 300 steps through the cave. The temperature stays constantly cool, so bring a jacket and wear sturdy shoes.
