Steinach, municipality in Thuringia, Germany
Steinach is a small town in the Steinach valley in the Sonneberg district. The place features traditional houses with slate roofs made from local materials and is surrounded by mountains.
The town was first mentioned in 1058 and had a long tradition in slate pencil manufacturing that began roughly 400 years ago. The marketplace was only created in 1920 and has shaped the town center ever since.
The name comes from the Steinach river that flows through the valley and historically shaped local crafts. Today you can still see traces of this heritage in the streets, from old workshops to small shops selling regional goods and local artisans keeping traditions alive.
The town is well connected by train, making it easy for visitors to arrive by rail. There are many hiking trails available, and in winter there is a ski resort depending on when you visit.
Workers once floated logs down the Steinach river, a practice documented since around 1317. This historical technique is still kept alive today through local stories and talks, making the place culturally distinctive.
