Henneberg

Henneberg sits at 410 meters elevation at the base of Schlossberg hill, featuring medieval castle ruins overlooking the surrounding Thuringian countryside with traditional buildings and monuments throughout the village.

The settlement served as the ancestral seat of the Counts of Henneberg from 1096 until 1583, with the hilltop castle functioning as their primary fortress and administrative center for nearly five centuries.

The village hosts annual summer theater performances at the castle ruins, traditional October harvest festivals, and maintains the historic St. Jakob church as a focal point for community gatherings and religious ceremonies.

Local administrative services are available on Thursday evenings from 6 PM to 7 PM excluding holidays, with the village connected to Meiningen city center via regional road L3019 approximately ten kilometers north.

The area features a sculptural park with preserved border watchtower and monument called 'Güldene Brücke' commemorating the former inner-German border that once divided this region from Bavaria during the Cold War.
