Saint Peter and Paul, Gothic church in Görlitz, Germany.
Saint Peter and Paul is a Gothic church in Görlitz spanning 72 meters long with an 84-meter spire that displays pointed arches and detailed stonework typical of the style. The building features tall windows and intricate carved details throughout its stone structure, creating the soaring interior spaces characteristic of Gothic design.
The site was founded in 1230, but construction of the current building began in 1425 under architect Conrad Pflüger and finished in 1497. This extended building period shows how the community invested over many decades in creating this large religious structure on foundations that were already hundreds of years old.
The interior shows sandstone epitaphs and a white pulpit decorated with gold, held up by life-size angel figures that once symbolized the piety of the city's wealthiest families. These furnishings reveal how the local community invested in religious art to demonstrate their devotion and standing.
The church opens Monday through Saturday from 10:00 to 18:00 and Sundays from 11:30 to 18:00, with shorter hours during winter months. Keep in mind that access may be limited during religious services or special church events.
Inside stands a remarkable organ built by Casparini in 1703 with 6,095 pipes arranged across 88 stops and features decorative sun shapes carved into its wooden case. This baroque instrument is a rare example of craftsmanship from that era and adds another layer of visual detail to the interior.
