Neuburg Air Base, military air base in Germany
Neuburg Air Base is a military airfield near Neuburg an der Donau in Bavaria, located about 3 kilometers southeast of the town center. The facility features long asphalt runways approximately 2,440 meters (8,000 feet) in length, administrative buildings, maintenance hangars, and aircraft parking areas situated at about 381 meters (1,250 feet) elevation.
The base traces its origins to 1912 when the first military airplane landed in Neuburg. Construction began in 1935, and during World War II it served as a production and storage site for Me 262 jet fighters before being damaged by Allied bombing in 1945.
The base is an active military facility closed to the public, but it can be observed from a distance outside the grounds. The best viewing spots are outside the perimeter, where visitors may occasionally see aircraft taking off and landing.
In 1967, a trio of men stole a Sidewinder missile from the base, disassembled it, and mailed it to Moscow's KGB. This daring act revealed the vulnerability of highly sensitive military equipment at such facilities.
