Gorleben is a municipality in the Lüchow-Dannenberg District situated along the Elbe River's eastern bank. It occupies land within a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve at roughly 20 meters above sea level, blending farmland with riverside terrain.
The municipality was first recorded in 1360 and housed a medieval castle that belonged to the von Bülow family from 1426 onward. The castle vanished from historical records by 1449.
The municipality consists of two distinct villages, Gorleben and Meetschow, which merged into a single administrative entity through the 1972 territorial restructuring.
The area sits within the Elbe floodplain and offers access to riverside and natural landscapes of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. A multipurpose community hall serves residents and visitors.
